Even the best of lawns sometimes get brown, dead areas of grass. If your lawn has become patchy, make it lush and green again by overseeding the problem areas. Purchase lawn seed from a nursery or garden center. If you are using a cool season grass such as Kentucky Bluegrass, Bentgrass or Rye Grass, then do the overseeding in the early part of fall – the time when cool season grasses grow the most. If you are using a warm season grass such as St. Augustine or Bermuda, then you should overseed in the early spring. Remove any thatch and loosen the soil in problem areas with a rake. Test the phosphorus and pH levels of the soil. You can purchase a soil testing kit from your local Cincinnati gardening store. After the soil is in order, mow your grass very low.
