Sprained ankle. Sprains happen when the foot turns the wrong way and the weight of the body pulls the ligaments in the ankle. The severity of the sprain depends on which of three ankle ligaments are damaged. The result is bleeding (within the muscle), inflammation and severe pain. Symptoms, obviously, include: difficulty walking on the injured side, swelling of the ankle, or in severe sprains, inability to walk on the foot itself.
