Some characteristics of orofacial disorders include: temporal mandibular joint (TMJ); placing the tongue on or between the teeth when swallowing (tongue thrust); placing the tongue on or between the teeth when rapidly repeating syllables such as la, ta, da, or na (i.e., na, na, na, na); resting the tongue on the lower lip and teeth or behind the bottom teeth while keeping the mouth open; thumb or finger sucking; incisors tip toward the lip; and an open bite.
