What are some basic BMPs that I can use to reduce storm water pollution?
The general idea behind most storm water BMPs is to limit the amount of pollutants that enter storm drains. This means that you should never dispose of any waste or chemicals (such as motor oil, detergents, paints, cleaning supplies, dirty water, etc.) in a storm drain. It also means that you should never leave waste or chemicals on the ground where they can be washed away by a precipitation event. That means that pet waste should be disposed of in a toilet or compost pile; you should never leave any liter or harmful substance on the ground; and you should not use excessive amounts of lawn fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
