My mom has some letters she acquired written by her mother’s first cousin that was in WWI. He was in the trenches and described some of his fears and what was going on. In one letter he describes hearing a couple of loud whistles blowing and all of a sudden the Germans, at a distance, came out of their trenches running toward his trench. There were so many, he thought, how could they be stopped as they fired into the German army. As they got closer the “big” guns from behind the lines started firing, stopping the German attack, and they retreated. This began a routine often repeated, by his unit and the Germans. Mustard gas was talked about all the time. They carried gas masks always. He had heard how this gas gets into your system and cuts off your ability to breath. He feared this because of how awful it would be to die this way. Fortunately, his unit never encountered this gas. He described the trenches as sickening.
