My cousin has a beautiful sapphire engagement ring. She picked it out herself and she absolutely loves it. You can use just about any stone for an engagement ring (and it probably won’t run you nearly as much as a diamond, so you can buy as big as you want!) it just won’t be labeled an engagement ring normally. However, I would caution against using a pearl. Although quite beautiful and everlasting on a rope, they tend to not be quite so steady in a ring setting. Even the more pricey pearl rings are to be worn with caution. My mother had a gorgeous black pearl ring that she received for an anniversary present. She had it for about 4 years and one day the pearl fell out. She had worn it on a regular basis over that time. When she finally found the pearl (by some miracle) the jeweler she took it to, to have it reset told her that this sort of thing happens often with pearl rings. Especially larger pearls.
