What are Somalian-Muslim weddings like?
I don’t know what you mean by functions. There are two parts of a marriage – the contract/marriage certificate, where they go to an Imam (it’s a religious procedure) and the legal contract/marriage certificate and the party which is to celebrate the marriage (this part is purely cultural). Today, there are different sorts of weddings a Somali might have. Some very traditional people might have the whole seven day wedding parties – it’s not partying for seven days non-stop but each day is a different celebration. I don’t know what they’re like since I never bothered going to one of those (too tiring). Then there are the one day ones – there are two kinds of those. Either they have two parties – men in the afternoon and women in the evening (they’re separated) or else they’re combined into one party.
