What are skin grafts?
Skin grafts are sometimes used for full-thickness burns. In order to replace the skin barrier and speed healing of severe burns, skin from another source may be used to cover the damaged areas. Skin may be used from another person, however this type of graft is often rejected by the immune system. A thin layer of skin may be removed from another body part (i.e., the leg) to help cover the burn area. New technology has allowed doctors to grow new skin from a small amount of skin tissue from burn patients. Also, synthetic materials have be created to help new skin form.
