What are sight words?
Sight word recognition is directly linked to reading success. Students who have memorized age appropriate sight vocabulary have higher reading fluency rates which support reading comprehension. Students must memorize sight words because they generally do not follow typical spelling patterns/rules. In other words, you can’t sound them out. (Example: the, said, does) Please pay close attention to our classroom newsletters, as I will publish a list of sight words for your child to memorize every month. As we work through our reading program, students will be responsible for recognizing their sight words with automaticity. The best way to support your child in memorizing his/her sight words is to make flash cards. *Study Tip* Have your child hold their flash cards. As they read the cards, they should create two piles. Pile 1 should be reserved for "Words I Know." Pile 2 should be for "Words I Need To Practice." Please note, if the reader takes longer than 3 seconds, or
