What are shin splints?
Shin splints is the name given to pain at the front of the lower leg. The most common cause is inflammation of the periostium of the tibia (sheath surrounding the bone). The injury is an overuse injury and can be caused by running on hard surfaces, running on tip toes and sports where a lot of jumping is involved. If you over pronate then you are also more susceptible to this injury. Symptoms include: Tenderness over the inside of the shin. Lower leg pain. Sometimes some swelling. Lumps and bumps over the bone. Pain when the toes or foot are bent downwards.
“Shin splints” is a general term used to describe chronic pain and tenderness of the lower leg. This condition is classified as an overuse injury to the muscles and tendons and can occur in one or both legs simultaneously. It is an injury that can range from irritating to disabling. Tenderness most often occurs along the inside edge of the “shin bone,” or tibi During the early stages, discomfort is noticed following a workout. If the condition goes untreated, pain will be felt during a workout then almost constantly, precluding your ability to participate in weight-bearing activities. At this point inflammation at the site will often be accompanied by some puffiness. Although the exact mechanism of injury is unknown, shin splints are believed to be the result of repetitive activity on hard surfaces or prolonged intense activity involving the leg muscles. Lack of flexibility of the involved muscles, feet that “pronate” or lean inward, improperly fitted shoes, and incorrect training tech
