One meaning for the scallop shell is to indicate that one is on a religious pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. Originally, one wore it when returning from Santiago because he/she had been to Land’s End to the west of Santiago and found it at the seashore it personally. The symbol has now evolved to where one wears it on the way (since most people return from the pilgrimage by some other means than walking back!
