what are servos?
Servos are small motors which are mainly used in radio controlled airplanes and cars for moving control surfaces and steering etc. They consist of a small motor which is geared down quite a lot connected to a potentiometer and an output shaft. Pulses are input into the servo motor and the output shaft turns until the pulses generated by a circuit attached to the potentiometer are the same. Thus the motor can be ‘instructed’ to move to a specific angle. This is quite helpful, for example, when building a robotic arm because you can get full control of all the joints. ‘Hacking’ a servo motor involves turning it into a small continuous (turns continuously when a voltage is present) geared motor. These are very helpful because they have *loads* of torque and are easy to mount and attach stuff to.
