What are selection tools for hiring people?
In my experience “selection tools” refer to things like aptitude tests, personality tests, skills and knowledge tests, etc. — things that provide an objective assessment of the job candidate. They are typically the first part in the hiring process and used to quickly identify candidates that are likely to be good fits for the job and the company. An interview is a subjective assessment, and while critical to the hiring process, I wouldn’t consider it a “tool.” In fact, the results of such tests, are frequently used to help the interviewer in deciding which questions to ask. Reference checks and background checks fall in more the realm of verification than selection. And if drug testing is used by a company, by the time a candidate is required to take a drug test, he’s usually already been offered the job (on the condition of passing the drug test.
