What are salicylates and how are they used to treat pain resulting from osteoarthritis?
Salicylates, or aspirin, have been used for many years. They were initially developed by the Bayer Company in the late 1800s and have been used over the years for many things, including prevention of cardiac problems and also control of joint inflammation. They were used very early on in the 1960s and 70s in high doses for rheumatoid arthritis and are sometimes still used. Salicylates are amazing drugs. They can prevent heart attacks and strokes and they can also control inflammation. They do have potential side effects, such as gastrointestinal irritation or even bleeding, but in small doses in generally healthy people, they can be very helpful in controlling the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis.
