What Are Retirement Communities?
A retirement community (also known at times as a retirement complex) is usually either a planned community or a naturally occurring community for residents that either retired from an active working life or have reached a certain age. A retirement community is different from a retirement house both in size (a retirement house is smaller – usually a single building or a rather small complex) and in that it has “common areas”, designed especially for socializing activities. Some retirement communities may be “Naturally Occurring Communities” (NORC) due to specific demographic developments of certain areas, while others are planned. The planned communities have the advantage of having been specifically designed for that purpose, which means well developed facilities that cater to the residents’ needs and interests.
