What are reserved teachers?
In voluntary controlled and foundation schools with a religious character, the governing body can appoint ‘reserved teachers’ to give religious instruction in accordance with the school’s religious ethos. The foundation governors must be satisfied that these teachers are competent. The head cannot be a reserved teacher, but a deputy head may. However, in foundation and voluntary controlled schools with a religious character, regard may be had to a prospective head’s ability and fitness to preserve and develop the religious character of the school.
