What are quagga mussels?
Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) are small, freshwater bi-valve mollusks (relatives to clams and oysters) that are triangular in shape with an obvious ridge between the side and bottom. The quagga mussel gets its name from the black (or dark brown) and white striped markings that appear on its shell. A quagga is an extinct animal related to the zebra. Quagga mussels are very similar to zebra mussels and the impacts that both these species cause are the same.
