What are probate and non-probate assets?
Probate assets are those that pass within the provisions of the will or are left to the estate. Non-probate assets are those that pass outside of the will to specific beneficiaries, including but not limited to life insurance payments, retirement plans, annuities, certain bank and brokerage accounts, payable-on-death (“POD”) accounts, trust accounts, and some joint accounts.
