• DSL provides a dedicated service over a single telephone line; cable modems offer a shared service over a cable network. Cable service can slow down when a large number of users, who share the same cable, are “logged on.” • The phone wire infrastructure to support DSL is already available to almost every home in the U.S. Some industry observers estimate that it would take 20 years for two-way cable upgrades to reach the number of homes and businesses currently connected to the telephone system infrastructure.
