@Hello Eva Moon: actually football can unite, but it can enhance and foster divide as well. That the World Cup divides rather than unites nations occur usually either when players of the different countries treat each other badly or if fans have anyway a deep hatred of another nation. they bring the hatred even before the game starts, into the game, but a scene during the play or a stupid comment can enhance this division. In summary, the world cup divides more than unites, when people (players, supporters, media, managers) behave racist and irresponsible towards each other and explain this bad behaviour as a typical behaviour of that nation, in other words a stereotype. In other words only the stupidity and racism of people make the World Cup divide rather than unite nations (and those people who do divide, actually like it – like the devil likes to divide).

Depends on how one views the matches. Every entertainment including all sports – World Cup events – they are meant for entertainment purposes and since we all humans, are patriotic to our countries and become a fan of the team. If one views this as purely an entertainment – to show the rest of the world that how good or bad their team. It is an event where we has seen several times an underdog teams do prosper and they have a chance to win in that game. So with that said, I say World Cup unites people, fans, players, media etc. But many times fans and players go over board and in those instances we see a rift developing between players, fans and media. Media and fans carry away this rift too deep and in all such instances we see that they are divided. That does not mean World cup causes the divide – but it is the humans who cause this rift. Players move on and play their next game. Many times even if their favorite team lost, I will bet 100% of the fans irrespective of how disappointed
