Pencil boards, more properly called shitajiki, are thin pieces of plastic, usually printed with some kind of image, that Japanese school children use as a sort of writing pad. They slip it between the sheets of paper in their notebook to prevent indentations from forming on the page below, and to keep the writing smooth. But we collect them for their beauty.
