What are other uses of joint compound?
While not exactly what it is intended for, nor is it a permanant repair; I have used joint compound in kitchen cupboards to level out the bottoms, as well as to seal any cracks where bugs or rodents could hide. The problem with this is, the amount of mud needed to level out shelves is usually very thick, resulting in cracking. This is just a temporary fix to a bug problem I had been having and I only recommend this if you will be replacing the cupboards soon. Also, the fast setting joint compund is all I would recommend as half inch thick of the normal kind takes a very long time to set.
In addition to finishing joints, joint compounds are used to skim coat or texture gypsum board surfaces. Water or latex based paint can be added to joint compound to texture the board surface. Refer to The Wallworks Guide (PDF:1.7MB/8pgs). Joint compounds also are used as an adhesive to laminate gypsum board to gypsum board or interior concrete masonry wall surfaces.
