What are other types of races?
Besides stakes races (graded or ungraded), some of the other terms you will see are “allowance”, handicaps, and claiming races. Handicaps are usually only for horses age three or four and up, and in this race a raceholder chooses who are the best racers, and gives them EXTRA weight to carry. One or two pounds can make a HUGE difference. This kind of race is pretty hard to duplicate in SIM, but maybe we’ll try some day. 🙂 These Handicap races can be stakes races or not. Allowance races are a step below stakes races in caliber, but still considered quality races in real-life. Many trainers, especially at smaller tracks, would be very proud to have an allowance racer in their stable! The last type of races are claiming races, and in this race ANY horse running can be BOUGHT by any other owner for a set price. Claiming races make up the bulk of races in real-life, but they are also the lowest caliber of race (though they, too, can vary from really low level to higher level claiming races)
