What are other states and districts doing in terms of PE in elementary schools?
Answer to #6: Currently, at least 10 states have laws on the books that require PE in elementary schools with specific minutes. The PE minutes range from 20 minutes a day to 150 minutes per week all of these states far exceed what MD requires. In the state of MD, virtually every district exceeds MCPS in the number of minutes of PE offered in elementary school. Fairfax county also exceeds MCPS in minutes of PE in ES. More and more districts across the country are making efforts to preserve and increase the amount of time devoted to physical education. In the summer of 2006, the Federal Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act (passed in June 2004) requires that ALL school districts across the country develop a wellness policy that addresses physical activity and education. We can expect to see more districts looking closely at their PE programs in the coming years.
