I am not sure about charcoal, but they make great planters for orchids. I have several growing in the half shells. The coconut shells seem to provide a great source of nutrients as they bread down. Leave just a thin veneer of coconut flesh in the shell, fill with potting soil, and let them grow–they sell well at flea markets, too!
