What Are Orthotics and Prosthetics?
Orthotics is the field of medicine that deals with orthoses—braces or splints used to support, align, correct, or prevent deformities or to protect or improve the function of an injured or painful limb. These range from custom-fitted arch supports to braces for the knee, back, shoulder, or arm. Prosthetics refers to the use of artificial limbs, or prostheses, to replace those lost from birth or from disease or injury. They can include sports prostheses, myoelectric hands and arms, and customized devices for congenital and pediatric amputees. Orthotists and prosthetists are certified healthcare professionals who have extensive training and experience in the design, fitting, and use of orthoses and prostheses. They also keep current with the latest advances in products, technology, and patient care. One Size Does Not Fit All When it comes to orthothoses and prostheses, one size definitely does not fit all.
