Following the demand for safer airplanes in the mid 1980s, in the USA, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began to require that most three- and four-engine aircraft and all double-engine jet-powered airplanes have a flight engineer, often referred to as a second officer, on board for all commercial flights.
