What are one benefit and one challenge of organic farming and selling products locally?
One benefit is it allows us to farm in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable, thus enabling us to grow healthy food for our members and provide safe working conditions for our workers. A benefit to selling products locally is we do not have to pay high transportation or marketing costs associated with selling out of our region. Even though we farm organically, sustainability is still a challenge as soil erodes even from organic farmland. To address this challenge, we have installed and continue to install projects designed to control soil erosion. How do you view your relationship to CSA customers? Our relationship with our membership is certainly different than the traditional consumer/producer exchange. Our members take on some of the risk of farming by financially supporting us at the onset of the season.
