Nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen, are necessary for algae and plants to grow in lakes. Too many nutrients can lead to excessive algae blooms which cause fish kills, taste and odor problems in drinking water, ruin the aesthetic experience of lakes, and otherwise alter lake ecology.
