What are Norwegian Forest Cats like?
The Norwegian Forest Cat (NFC) is a large breed of cat, with the adult males weighing an average 9kg. The female is smaller, at around 5-6kg at adulthood. They breed are slow to mature, and may take around 3-4 years to ‘fill out’. They are a natural breed, with a semi-long haired double coat with an upper coat which is ‘waterproof’. This becomes very dense in winter, with a full ruff & mane, knickerbockers and tufts from their ears. They also have tufts of fur between their toes to keep their feet warm in their natural environment (the snowy forests of Norway). Although many of the articles you read say that the coat is self-maintaining, in reality they require a bit of help with a brush out about once a week, and more often in the spring when they have a moult of their winter coat. There is an excellent description of NFCs at http://home.powertech.no/skogkatt/NFOfaq.
