What are my tax obligations if I am an active duty military person maintaining a legal domicile in a state other than Virginia?
If your vehicle is titled solely to you, a military person residing in Loudoun County because of military orders, it will qualify for exemption from local personal property taxation under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, and you may purchase a vehicle decal for $1.00 from the Treasurer’s Office. This can only be done at the original time of purchase. No refunds or adjustments can be made on any decal purchase. If the vehicle is titled jointly with a nonmilitary person, you will be liable for both the regular vehicle decal fee and personal property tax in Loudoun County if the same tax is not paid to the registered owner’s legal domicile. To obtain an exemption, military personnel must file a Certificate of Legal Domicile form with the Commissioner’s Office, accompanied by a recent leave and earnings statement, military ID and current state vehicle registration.
