What are my options if the neph backscatter motor appears to be failing?
• discontinue the neph measurements. (hopefully you don’t choose this!) • remove the neph and send it to TSI for a motor upgrade. They will replace both internal motors with better ones (i.e., larger shafts and bearings) for around US$7500. This is the best long-term solution but is expensive and will cause a significant data gap. • replace the failing motor yourself. We keep a supply of these motors here at NOAA for our collaborators which we rebuild with higher quality bearings and lubricant. This does not solve the problem, it just extends (we think) the motor life a little. If you choose this option you will be changing these motors periodically (perhaps every year or two), but the cost is low (basically only shipping costs to us) and there is less of a data gap. We require that you send us the failed motor after replacement so that we can rebuild it for the next replacement. If you are considering Option #3, please let us know. We can send you a document on how to replace the back
