What are my obligations once I begin to receive workers comp benefits?
Your employer will make every effort to bring you back to work as soon as possible and to make “reasonable accommodation” for your return. You, in turn, have an obligation to accept employment that you are physically able to perform. In some cases, your return to work may require modifications to the job you previously performed. In other cases, when your restrictions are more severe, you may be placed in a “light duty” position until you regain your ability to perform your former job. Unfortunately, there are some cases in which the employer, despite all his efforts, will not have work which accommodates your restrictions. In such cases you may have an obligation to begin to look for work with a new employer. If you are unable to return to work with your regular employer, but begin working with a new employer, the Workers’ Compensation Act requires that you report your return to work within seven days of such an event.
