What are my chances of having a remission without treatment?
It is impossible to say, because this has not been well researched. While it is extremely unlikely for adults to undergo spontaneous remission, remissions do appear to occur occasionally among children. One study estimated that in perhaps 4% of reported IgAN cases there had been a spontaneous remission of all clinical symptoms. Whether this was paralleled by the spontaneous disappearance of IgA deposits in the kidneys, or by the restoration of normal glomerular structure is unknown. Patients in remission are rarely biopsied or studied to see what might have induced their remission. Some doctors believe the use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications may reduce chances for a natural remission.
