What are municipal police and how are they different from normal police?

Basically municipal police are your city police and work for a Police Chief who is supervised by a Mayor or City Council. Their jurisdiction is usually limited to the city limits. The Sheriff of a county is an elected official (by the voters of the county) and his/her deputies work within the confines of the specific county. State Police are exactly what the name implies. All share in the same basic duties and responsibilities – but the difference usually lies in the jurisdiction (where they work). Hope this helps.
