What are Manipulated Variables and what are Subject Variables?

0

Manipulated variables are what the name implies, something that you MAKE happen (manipulate). Those are the only true Independent variables. Subject = Participant Variable. These are variables that are part of the participant, which means you didn’t have anything to do with them happening. Examples are hair color, race, gender. You didn’t make anyone a woman, that is just a characteristic of the subject. In your example, the women are a SUBJECT variable. The previous answerer is completely wrong. No one randomly assigned these women to be either Bulimic or non-bulimic in their lives (this would be outrageously unethical). Bulimia or not is a characteristic of the women before hand, so it is a participant variable. You haven’t given enough information about the drawings to determine what type of variable they are. Were all the drawings of only two types (lets say overweight and underweight) then that would be a manipulated variable. You MADE the drawings equal over and under weight.
