What are Low Profile Woods?
The golf club industry is a funny game! The old Persimmon woods (before “metal woods”) had a brass sole plate in order to provide a low centre of gravity. Along came metal woods and eventually titanium which allowed for club heads to be manufactured 40% larger which launched the “Big” era of drivers. Then, low and behold, came the low profile woods, which believe it or not, feature a heavier sole with a lower centre of gravity. (Remember the Persimmon woods mentioned above?) What goes around, comes around! A great deal of work is now being done in the development of new materials and alloys to get the centre of gravity as low as possible and practical. The low profile woods have taken a large share of the market, especially the fairway woods and are now common clubs in the bags of PGA, Senior Tour and LPGA players.
