What are Liquid Herbal Extracts / Herbal Tinctures?
Simply put, herbal tinctures are made by steeping a specified amount of herb (dried or fresh, depending on the desired outcome) in a specified amount of alcohol for a specified amount of time. Once the plant material has been steeped for this time, the liquid is strained off, the ‘bits’ left behind for the compost, and the liquid is bottled to be used as a medicine. Various factors determine how much plant material is needed, how much alcohol is required (and whether any water needs to be added) and how long the tincture needs to be steeped for. Once this tincture has been made it can be used in a prescription.
