What are KUA and Progress Energy doing in anticipation of a busy hurricane season?
Progress Energy system conducted a test in May and an official from the energy company said their system is as ready as it can be. The test is done every year before hurricane season. Progress Energy also conducts an annual disaster drill that they run their employees through. “One of the things we found out in 2004 is trees are the leading cause of power outages. Limbs being blown into power poles. So, we’ve dramatically stepped up our tree-trimming schedule and have identified and trimmed back limbs and trees we think would be a problem if a hurricane came through. We’ve increased our budget for that so we’re putting a lot of resources and budget into that,” an offiical said. K.U.A had problems with transmission and distribution in 2004, so they have changed out most of their wood poles, the transmission and distribution poles. They changed them out with concrete poles to reinforce them.
