What are keys to treating my elderly cat with kidney failure?

My 13 year old cat has CRF and is on sub Q fluids as well as a liquid multivitamin (with iron for anemia as these cats are usually anemic). He is also on a Potassium supplement and a special reduced protein diet. There are many things that can be done. My vet had also suggested Epogen (too costly for us) to increase his red blood cell count. I’ve even heard of blood transfusions and kidney transplants….both very costly, but for some people an option they will take. I do give my cat 50cc subQ fluids daily along with his vitamins, potassium and special diet. I tried to go to subQ’s every other day but he did not tolerate that well. It is my understanding that all of these cats are treated on their own schedule as they tolerate treatment. Not all vets are created equal on the treatment regimen, so I would consider getting some second or even third opinions or working with your vet to find some options that you are all comfortable with.
