What are judicial conduct committees?
Judicial conduct committees exist in every state and the District of Columbia and are responsible for overseeing the conduct of judges both on and off the bench. They play a vital role in promoting public confidence in the judiciary and in preserving the integrity of the judicial process. Judicial conduct committees provide the means by which standards of judicial conduct are enforced and are a forum for citizens’ complaints against judges. Committees receive and investigate allegations of judicial misconduct, make recommendations for discipline or removal, and strengthen the judiciary by encouraging judges to maintain high standards of professional and personal conduct.
