WHAT ARE “IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES”?
“Irreconcilable differences” causing an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage are grounds for divorce in Illinois. Such grounds may be used, if the parties lived separately for six (6) months in uncontested cases and two (2) years in contested cases, and the court finds that reconciliation attempts have failed or would be impracticable and not in the best interests of the family.
