What are Immediate Dentures?
When many of your teeth are loose or painful, they may be beyond saving. This condition is usually caused by advanced periodontal disease or by decay. Periodontal disease causes bone to be lost; if it’s not caught in time, there’s so little support for the teeth that they have to be removed. Removing your teeth and replacing them with a denture may be the best way to eliminate the infection and restore the health of your mouth. When the entire procedure is completed in one day, it’s called an immediate denture. To begin the process, Dr. Levin first takes impressions of your mouth. From these impressions, precise working models of your mouth are made. It’s from these models that the dentures are made. Dr. Levin will work with you to select the best color and shape for your new teeth. When your denture is ready, he’ll extract your remaining teeth. An “Immediate Denture” is one issued at the time of extraction of teeth deemed otherwise to be of poor prognosis and / or of limited strategic value and in subsequent need of replacement for aesthetic and / or functional reasons. Immediate dentures, however, are not without their problems; 1. It is not possible to accurately determine the aesthetics of the dentures prior to their placement in your mouth because of the presence of natural teeth. This has to be done at laboratory level and will be a best estimation of where the teeth should be from a mechanical and aesthetic point of view. Any further major alteration in teeth arrangement may necessitate the complete remaking of the dentures instead of subsequently relining them following initial tissue healing and associated shrinkage. 2. Because teeth are removed and the dentures placed immediately at time of surgery, it is not possible to produce an accurate fit.
