What are horse hives?
Hives are the most common type of skin allergy that results in raised areas of the skin which are also called urticaria, rash, or wheals. What are the possible causes of horse hives? Horse hives can be an allergic reaction to your horse from: • coming into contact with a plant such as nettles • a vaccination • a topical or oral medication • a topical product • something in the diet, even eating fresh spring grass • an insect bite or sting • internal parasites such as small strongyles Some horses may even have respiratory or diarrhea problems as a result of the hives. While most cases of hives disappear in 24-48 hours, if your horse has a severe reaction, you will want to contact your vet. Ask yourself if anything has changed with your horse in the past 24-48 hours. Did you feed a new food item, did your horse receive a vaccination, or did you wash their saddle pad, blanket, etc. in something different? Think of any possible cause for the hives.
