What are Hoodoos and where are they?
Hoodoos are formed as a result of erosion (the gradual removal of sediment by rain and wind). Large rock caps protect the sand pillar beneath from eroding, resulting in a mushroom-shaped geological structure with a hard rock top and a soft, sediment-based body. To get to the Hoodoos from Drumheller, head southeast on the Hoodoo Trail (Hwy 10) and you will see a road sign directing you to the Hoodoo site. After your visit at the Hoodoos, keep traveling south on the Hoodoo Trail and you’ll arrive in East Coulee. There you can take a guided tour of Canada’s last-standing wooden tipple mine at the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site.
