They are short questionaires created to measure the amount of disability/handicap that a person has due to a significant hearing loss. Another way to say that is, these scales are used to measure the amount of problems that a person might be having in daily situations due to a hearing loss. They are commonly used as a part of a hearing screening program when traditional tests of listening for quiet tones cannot be performed. Ok, so if I am having a lot of problems listening or understanding words in different situations, and this is starting to affect the quality of my life then it could be that I have a hearing loss.
