Unrestricted gifts: These gifts are the lifeblood of GW’s academic mission. Unrestricted funds are the fuel that university leaders use to support GW’s teachers and scholars, offer vital scholarships and financial aid to students, and provide the flexibility to take advantage of emerging opportunities. A steadily increasing level of unrestricted giving is vital to GW’s progress. Student Scholarships and Financial Aid: GW recently launched a five-year plan to address affordability and cost. This plan includes a goal of quadrupling annual fund raising for student aid from $10 million to $40 million within five years. GW currently awards more than $118 million in scholarships every year to over 60 percent of its students. However, tuition revenue currently funds 86 percent of all financial aid. GW’s need-based financial aid package ranked No. 3 in the country according to U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2009.” Other universities in the top five are Vanderbilt, Harvard,
