There are so many ways… I think the first is for you to look at your curriculum and make sure your students can see themselves in whatever you plan to teach for the year. Even if you teach in a predominantly White school, it is important that students are exposed to different cultures and forms of expression. Culture is much more than holidays but should include language and stories and honoring of heroes and traditions… Have all of your students write about their own cultural experiences and share them with the class. Have guest speakers come in who represent a variety of cultures. These speakers do not need to necessarily speak about culture but can share about the work they do in business or in the community. Culture will naturally be part of the conversation. Ask community leaders to help you think about ways to incorporate culture into the everyday workings of your school.
