What are Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)?
On March 7, 2003 the FDA published its Proposed Rule for Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Dietary Ingredients or Dietary Supplements. The proposed regulations intended to ensure that dietary supplements are not adulterated with contaminants or impurities, and are labeled to accurately reflect the ingredients in the product. The FDA expects to build consumer confidence in all dietary supplements by insuring the identity, purity, quality, strength, and composition that the label proclaims. How can we assure the quality of products when they are manufactured at offsite facilities? By working with a contract manufacturer, in contrast to being the onsite manufacturer, an extra layer of quality control is in place.
