Kids typically learn geometry during several small units in elementary and middle school. They will learn basic geometry during these units, including how to find the area and perimeter of polygons, identify different types of angles and graph coordinate points. When they take algebra, which is usually in eighth or ninth grade, kids have to use their knowledge of graphing during several units. Algebra units that use coordinate graphing include lessons on absolute value, parabolas and functions. In many schools, kids take a year of geometry the year after algebra, usually in ninth or tenth grade. During this intensive year, kids learn how to complete two-column proofs and solve equations involving plane geometry, like how to find the surface area of a prism. When students learn geometry in ninth or tenth grade, this is usually the most intensive year of geometry they will ever take. In subsequent years, they will do some graphing and geometry but won’t learn additional advanced geometry
